Artist Reveals All

Here it is, the information you have been waiting for – the unvarnished truth, the painfully slow progess, the blind alleys, the cost overruns, the wandering around in Home Depot with only a vague plan of attack — finally laid bare in this tell-all post…

Well not exactly, but I have finished the retrospective record of my progress so far toward becoming a daguerreotypist – you can read about it here in the newly posted full version of the Dag Diary. After reading this you may say – Why that’s just a glorified shopping list! And in some ways you would be correct. Since I haven’t really kept a diary since day one, I used my financial records to jog my memory a bit. (I also think that there is a certain fundamental truth in the proposition that getting started with daguerreotypes does require a rather long shopping list). It’s the reason I also have chosen to include the amounts I have spent on things – so other beginners can get a sense of the ante that may be required to participate in this particular obsession.

I don’t by any means put this record forward as an exemplar to follow if you want to become a daguerreotypist – I like to imagine it can be done more cheaply and I am sure it can be done faster (ask Jon Lewis). What it is instead is a pretty complete record of one journey by one person at this particular point in time, and I offer it to any who find it useful now or in the future.

I will continue to update it as I go along.

Enjoy.
